Hideyuki Kurata. While delving into the upper layers of the Abyss to search for relics, Riko and her partner Nat become separated.
Riko then sees Nat about to be eaten by a crimson splitjaw and draws the beast's attention in order to save him.
However, Riko gets cornered by the splitjaw and is about to be devoured when it is suddenly chased off by a powerful energy blast. Riko traces the source of the blast back to a robot boy who has fallen unconscious, and she and Nat carry him back their home at the Belchero Orphanage.
With the help of her friends, Riko is able to revive the robot boy, who she names Reg. She then takes him outside to show him the town of Orth, which sits on top of the Abyss.
Riko and her friends attempt to figure out exactly what Reg is, but cannot find anything mentioning a robot in the list of recorded relics recovered from the Abyss.
Realizing that Reg will be taken away and dissected if he was ever found out, Riko disguises him as a regular orphan and arranges his enrollment in the orphanage.
As a member of the orphanage, Reg will be trained to be an Abyss delver like Riko. Later, The Uncle Habo returns from an expedition to the Abyss, carrying the white whistle of Lyza, Riko's mother, as well as a sealed document.
As the town celebrates the return of Lyza's whistle, Jiruo tells Riko about how she was born in the Abyss, and Lyza used a rare relic to return her safely to the surface before disappearing on another expedition.
Riko is then given Lyza's whistle and is allowed to observe the sealed document. In it, Riko finds a drawing of Reg as well as a note from Lyza saying that she is waiting at the bottom of the Abyss, hinting that Lyza is possibly alive.
Upon reading the note, Riko decides to descend into the Abyss to find Lyza. Reg also decides to accompany her since he believes that he will find answers to both his own identity and his lost memories in the Abyss.
However, Nat openly opposes their plan, since he knows that if Riko goes to the bottom of the Abyss, the Curse of the Abyss will make her unable to return to the surface ever again.
He then points out Lyza is most likely dead since it would be impossible for even a White Whistle to survive in the Abyss for ten years, which angers Riko.
The next night, Riko sneaks out of the orphanage to begin her journey. Reg stays behind temporarily to convince Nat to come say goodbye, but finds he is missing.
After seemingly bluffing a suspicious Jiruo, Reg reunites with Riko and they are met by Nat, who regrets the hurtful things he said to Riko and agrees to guide them to a secret entry point into the Abyss.
After saying their goodbyes, Riko and Reg descend into the Abyss. Riko and Reg manage to descend deep down into the first layer of the Abyss.
Reg then remembers that Jiruo slipped a letter into his backpack and reads it. The letter contains a copy of vital information about the Abyss, as well as a note from Jiruo warning the two that he will pursue them at dawn.
Riko concludes that Jiruo is testing them, and if they can reach the second layer without getting caught, he will stop chasing them.
The two continue down to the second layer when they are intercepted by Habo. He tells them that Nat and Shiggy requested that he escort the two of them to the Seeker Camp in the second layer.
While grateful, Riko declines Habo's help since she and Reg want to reach the second layer on their own.
Habo informs them that the guardian of the Seeker Camp is Ozen the Immovable, a White Whistle who helped Lyza transport the infant Riko to the surface.
He also warns the two to be wary of Ozen before saying his farewells. Riko and Reg then reach the second layer, the Forest of Temptation.
As Riko and Reg proceed through the second layer, they encounter a corpse weeper, a large carnivorous bird that can mimic the cries of help from its prey.
Riko is captured by a corpse weeper and flown to its nest to be fed to its chicks. In desperation, Reg activates an energy cannon within his hand that destroys the corpse weeper and large swathe of the surrounding landscape.
Riko is saved, and she is greatly impressed by Reg's energy cannon, which she dubs the "Incinerator", but Reg then passes out from the strain of using the weapon.
After Reg wakes up, he and Riko proceed to the Inverted Forest at the bottom of the second layer, where the Seeker Camp is located, chased by monkey-like creatures.
As they approach the Seeker Camp, Reg's extendable arms are seized by its guardian, Ozen the Immovable. Riko and Reg are allowed inside the Seeker Camp, where they finally meet Ozen as well as her apprentice, Marulk.
Riko thanks Ozen for helping carrying her out of the Abyss as a child, though Ozen darkly notes with amusement that she had considered many times just leaving Riko behind.
Ozen allows Riko and Reg to stay the night at the Seeker Camp, and they quickly befriend Marulk, who wishes that they stay for a while longer so they can cave raid together.
However, Riko reluctantly declines, as she wants to continue her journey to find Lyza. That night, Riko leaves her room to look for the bathroom and encounters a strange creature.
Terrified, Riko flees back to her room. The next morning, Ozen tells Riko and Reg that she knows about the creature, and leads them to her chamber to explain it.
Along the way, she tells Riko that Lyza is dead, as she recovered the letter from a grave in the fourth layer.
In addition, the note Riko received telling her to go to the bottom of the Abyss was not written by Lyza.
Ozen reveals that the Curse Warding Box has the power to temporarily revive the dead and the monster Riko saw was a lump of meat she had placed in there, returning to life before dying again a few hours later.
She also reveals that Riko was dead when Lyza delivered her and she was revived by the powers of the box as well, although she has no idea how much time until the effects will wear off and she will die again.
Ozen then starts attacking Reg, who attempts to defeat her, but falls unconscious after attempting, and failing to use Incinerator against her.
After he awakens, Ozen reveals that she was testing them to check if they can survive by themselves in the Abyss and decides to train them, just like she once did with Lyza.
She also reveals that the grave she found was in fact empty, implying that Lyza may still be alive. After Reg recovers, Ozen tasks him and Riko to survive in a nearby forest for 10 days without returning as part of their training.
She warns them that Reg's Incinerator must only be used as a last resort because after Reg fires it, he will collapse within minutes and remain unconscious for approximately 2 hours, leaving them defenseless.
Ozen then leaves Reg and Riko to fend for themselves. Despite some setbacks, Riko and Reg successfully complete their survival training and return to the camp, where Ozen reveals to them that the note written by Lyza was done in some kind of fabric that is too strong for even her to tear apart, another sign that she must be indeed alive.
Before sending them away, Ozen gives Riko the "Everlasting Pickaxe", Lyza's weapon that she salvaged from the Fourth Layer, warning them that it could be used as an alternative to Incinerator, but may have only a few uses left before breaking, and shares with them the secrets of the Abyss accessible only to the White Whistles, while instructing them to avoid the other White Whistles that are currently exploring the Fifth Layer, as they could be a threat to them.
Ozen then reminisces about a promise she made to Lyza to help Riko find her if they ever crossed paths. Riko then bids farewell to Marluk and the other residents of the camp before setting for the Third Layer of the Abyss, the "Great Fault".
Riko and Reg begin climbing down the Great Fault, using a network of caves to avoid the flying predators that inhabit the layer.
However, they accidentally stumble into a madokajack nest and Reg is forced to use his Incinerator to kill the madokajack.
However, this attracts the attention of the crimson splitjaw that had previously been wounded by the Incinerator, and after narrowly escaping, Reg falls unconscious, leaving Riko to fend for herself.
As Riko drags Reg along, she is lured in and swallowed by an amakagame and forced to cut her way out of its stomach.
Riko is then forced to flee a swarm of neritantans and finds herself in a cave with an upward slope. With no other choice, Riko heads up the slope, suffering the effects of the Curse and experiencing various hallucinations.
After reaching the top of the cave, Riko realizes how important Reg is to her as both a friend and protector. Reg wakes up just as the crimson splitjaw returns and he is able to fight it and chase it off.
Riko and Reg begin their trek further down the Goblet of Giants, but as they press onward, they sense a presence moving along with them as they speak.
They continue descending until they are confronted by an orbed piercer, and Reg prepares to face it until Riko reveals its spines are capable of piercing steel and poisoning their victims, putting Reg's life in danger as well.
They attempt to escape, but the monster is able to read their movements and stop them, knocking Lyza's pickaxe out of their grasp and removing any means of defending themselves.
Reg tries to stop the following attack with a scaled umbrella, but the spines pierce through not only the umbrella, but Riko's hand as well, injecting lethal poison into her system, forcing Reg to escape with her by ascending.
This unfortunately results in Riko suffering the Fourth Layer's Curse: bleeding from every orifice. Coupled with the poison, Riko hallucinates as well, and she urges Reg to sever her arm to prevent the poison from going further.
Though hesitant, he complies. Mid-way through the process, Riko stops breathing, and fearing the worst, Reg falls into despair until a mysterious being tells him to remain calm and guides him to perform CPR, getting Riko breathing once more.
They retreat into the hideout of the being, who is revealed to be Nanachi. Nanachi escorts Reg and the badly injured Riko to a hideout and begins to work on patching up Riko.
Reg is introduced to Mitty, a creature living with Nanachi who reveals that they are Hollows: aspiring young cave raiders who lost their humanity as a result of the Curse as they ascended from the Sixth Layer, although Nanachi exhibits proof of surviving and retaining a semblance of humanity.
Nanachi sends Reg off to fetch ingredients to heal Riko as well as to make Nanachi's dinner. While he is out, Nanachi seems to recognize Lyza's white whistle.
After fetching the ingredients, Reg is sent to clean Riko's blood and urine stained clothes at a riverbank behind Nanachi's hideout, and there a memory resurfaces of him standing by a gravestone with Lyza's Blaze Reap in the ground.
While Riko is left alone, Mitty begins to eye her. Back in Orth, Kiyui falls ill on his birthday, following a mysterious trend called the "Birthday Death Disease" which has begun to plague the town.

The main tank was not ready in time for the learn more here day of principal photography.
Once Cameron arrived in Hollywood, he quickly realized that a group of scientists was not that commercial and changed it to a group of blue-collar workers.
These images reminded him of his short story. He then wrote the script, basing the character of Lindsey on Hurd and finished it by the end of The cast and crew trained for underwater diving for one week in the Cayman Islands.
Furthermore, Cameron's production company had to design and build experimental equipment and develop a state-of-the-art communications system that allowed the director to talk underwater to the actors and dialogue to be recorded directly onto tape for the first time.
Cameron had originally planned to shoot on location in the Bahamas where the story was set but quickly realized that he needed to have a completely controlled environment because of the stunts and special visual effects involved.
Two specially constructed tanks were used. The first one, based on the abandoned plant's primary reactor containment vessel, held 7.
At the time, it was the largest fresh-water filtered tank in the world. Additional scenes were shot in the second tank, an unused turbine pit, which held 2.
It consisted of six partial and complete modules that took over half a year to plan and build from scratch. Can-Dive Services Ltd.
Two million dollars was spent on set construction. Filming was also done at the largest underground lake in the world—a mine in Bonne Terre, Missouri , which was the background for several underwater shots.
The main tank was not ready in time for the first day of principal photography. Cameron delayed filming for a week and pushed the smaller tank's schedule forward, demanding that it be ready weeks ahead of schedule.
In addition, enormous pipes with elbow fittings had been improperly installed. There was so much water pressure in them that the elbows blew off.
Cameron's cinematographer, Mikael Salomon , used three cameras in watertight housings that were specially designed. The filmmakers had to figure out how to keep the water clear enough to shoot and dark enough to look realistic at 2, feet m , which was achieved by floating a thick layer of plastic beads in the water and covering the top of the tank with an enormous tarpaulin.
Safety conditions were also a major factor with the installation of a decompression chamber on site, along with a diving bell and a safety diver for each actor.
The breathing fluid used in the film actually exists but has only been thoroughly investigated in animals. The rat shown in the film was actually breathing fluid and survived unharmed.
Ed Harris did not actually breathe the fluid. He held his breath inside a helmet full of liquid while being towed 30 feet 10 m below the surface of the large tank.
He recalled that the worst moments were being towed with fluid rushing up his nose and his eyes swelling up.
Cameron and the person underwater diving crew sank to 50 feet 17 m and stayed down for five hours at a time.
To avoid decompression sickness, they would have to hang from hoses halfway up the tank for as long as two hours, breathing pure oxygen.
The cast and crew endured over six months of grueling six-day, hour weeks on an isolated set. At one point, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio had a physical and emotional breakdown on the set and on another occasion, Ed Harris burst into spontaneous sobbing while driving home.
Cameron himself admitted, "I knew this was going to be a hard shoot, but even I had no idea just how hard. I don't ever want to go through this again".
It took him more than four hours to set up the shot safely. Jim Cameron is the type of director who pushes you to the edge, but he doesn't make you do anything he wouldn't do himself.
Over-chlorination led to divers' skin burning and exposed hair being stripped off or turning white. As production went on, the slow pace and daily mental and physical strain of filming began to wear on the cast and crew.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio remembered, "We never started and finished any one scene in any one day". Michael Biehn also grew frustrated by the waiting.
He claimed that he was in South Carolina for five months and only acted for three to four weeks. It was so black I couldn't see my hand.
I couldn't surface. I realized I might not get out of there. We just had to get our frustrations out. Harris later denied this rumor and helped promote the film.
Fun to make is not one of them. To create the alien water tentacle, Cameron initially considered cel animation or a tentacle sculpted in clay and then animated via stop-motion techniques with water reflections projected onto it.
The set was photographed from every angle and digitally recreated so that the pseudopod could be accurately composited into the live-action footage.
The film was to have opened on July 4, , but its release was delayed for more than a month by production and special effects problems.
Studio executives were nervous about the film's commercial prospects when preview audiences laughed at scenes of serious intent.
Industry insiders said that the release delay was because nervous executives ordered the film's ending completely re-shot.
The critical consensus states: "The utterly gorgeous special effects frequently overshadow the fact that The Abyss is also a totally gripping, claustrophobic thriller, complete with an interesting crew of characters.
David Ansen of Newsweek , summarizing the theatrical release, wrote, "The payoff to The Abyss is pretty damn silly — a portentous deus ex machina that leaves too many questions unanswered and evokes too many other films.
In the end, however, this torpedo turns out to be a dud—it swerves at the last minute, missing its target and exploding ineffectually in a flash of fantasy and fairy-tale schtick.
While praising the film's first two hours as "compelling", the Toronto Star remarked, "But when Cameron takes the adventure to the next step, deep into the heart of fantasy, it all becomes one great big deja boo.
If we are to believe what Cameron finds way down there, E. But the dopey wrap-up sinks the rest 20, leagues. I'd sooner believe that Moby Dick could swim up the drainpipe.
The release of the Special Edition in garnered much praise. Each giving it thumbs up, Siskel remarked, " The Abyss has been improved," and Ebert added, "It makes the film seem more well rounded.
It was also nominated for:. The film ended up winning a total of three other awards from these organizations. The soundtrack to The Abyss was released on August 22, Even as the film was in the first weeks of its theatrical release, rumors were circulating of a wave sequence missing from the film's end.
From the distributor's perspective, the looming three-hour length limited the number of times the film could be shown each day, assuming that audiences would be willing to sit through the entire film, though 's Dances with Wolves would shatter both industry-held notions.
Further, test audience screenings revealed a surprisingly mixed reaction to the sequences as they appeared in their unfinished form; in post-screening surveys, they dominated both the "Scenes I liked most" and "Scenes I liked least" fields.
Contrary to speculation, studio meddling was not the cause of the shortened length; Cameron held final cut as long as the film met a running time of roughly two hours and 15 minutes.
He later noted, "Ironically, the studio brass were horrified when I said I was cutting the wave. What emerges in the winnowing process is only the best stuff.
And I think the overall caliber of the film is improved by that. I cut only two minutes of Terminator. On Aliens , we took out much more.
I even reconstituted some of that in a special TV release version. The sense of something being missing on Aliens was greater for me than on The Abyss , where the film just got consistently better as the cut got along.
The film must function as a dramatic, organic whole. When I cut the film together, things that read well on paper, on a conceptual level, didn't necessarily translate to the screen as well.
I felt I was losing something by breaking my focus. Breaking the story's focus and coming off the main characters was a far greater detriment to the film than what was gained.
The film keeps the same message intact at a thematic level, not at a really overt level, by working in a symbolic way. Cameron elected to remove the sequences along with other, shorter scenes elsewhere in the film, reducing the running time from roughly two hours and 50 minutes to two hours and 20 minutes and diminishing his signature themes of nuclear peril and disarmament.
Subsequent test audience screenings drew substantially better reactions. Star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio publicly expressed regret about some of the scenes selected for removal from the film's theatrical cut: "There were some beautiful scenes that were taken out.
I just wish we hadn't shot so much that isn't in the film. Shortly after the film's premiere, Cameron and video editor Ed Marsh created a longer video cut of The Abyss for their own use that incorporated dailies.
The CGI tools developed for Terminator 2: Judgment Day allowed ILM to complete the rumored tidal wave sequence, as well as correcting flaws in rendering for all their other work done for the film.
The tidal wave sequence had originally been designed by ILM as a physical effect, using a plastic wave, but Cameron was dissatisfied with the end result, and the sequence was scrapped.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day screenwriter and frequent Cameron collaborator William Wisher had a cameo in the scene as a reporter in Santa Monica who catches the first tidal wave on camera.
When it was discovered that original production sound recordings had been lost, new dialogue and foley were recorded, but since Kidd Brewer had died of a self-inflicted gunshot before he could return to re-loop his dialog, producers and editors had to lift his original dialogue tracks from the remaining optical-sound prints of the dailies.
The Special Edition was therefore dedicated to his memory as a result. As Alan Silvestri was not available to compose new music for the restored scenes, Robert Garrett, who had composed temporary music for the film's initial cutting in , was chosen to create new music.
The Special Edition was completed in December , with 28 minutes added to the film, and saw a limited theatrical release in New York City and Los Angeles on February 26, , and expanded to key cities nationwide in the following weeks.
Both versions of the film continue to receive public exhibitions, including a screening of an original 35mm print of the theatrical cut on August 20, , in New York City.
In the pay cable channels Cinemax and HBO began broadcasting both versions of the film in p. Cameron gestured to the head of Fox Home Entertainment, implying the decision lay with the studio.
Cameron added, "We've done a wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it's going to look insanely good.
In March digital intermediate colourist Skip Kimball posted a photo to his Instagram suggesting that he was working on the film.
In November Cameron told Empire magazine that a Blu-ray transfer was "complete for my review" and he hoped it would be ready before Science-fiction author Orson Scott Card was hired to write a novelization of the film based on the screenplay and discussions with Cameron.
Card also wrote the aliens as a colonizing species which preferentially sought high-pressure deep-water worlds to build their ships as they traveled further into the galaxy their mothership was in orbit on the far side of the moon.
The NTIs' knowledge of neuroanatomy and nanoscale manipulation of biochemistry was responsible for many of the deus ex machina aspects of the film.
A licensed interactive fiction video game based on the script was being developed for Infocom by Bob Bates , but was cancelled when Infocom was shut down by its then-parent company Activision.
The game takes place a few years after the film, where the player must find a cure for a deadly virus. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
